Daniel Brake, LMFT-S

You recognize that something needs to change, but so far your efforts to fix the problem haven’t worked. Or perhaps there is someone in your life telling you to seek help. Like many people, you may hesitate to call a therapist. You should be able to figure this out on your own, right? What does it say about you to need help?

I get it.

I get it, because I’ve been there too. The first time I walked into a therapist’s office, long before I became one, it was an act of desperation. I was miserable and didn’t understand why. All I knew was I couldn’t take it much longer. My fear was that the therapist would think me crazy, or pathetic, or even worse, weak.

She didn’t, because I wasn’t.

You are not crazy, nor are not weak. Not knowing the answer doesn’t make you stupid. Your behaviors made sense at some point, they just don’t work anymore.

Here’s the rub. Being smart isn’t enough. It isn’t enough because understanding isn’t enough. Understanding is only the beginning. After that, you have to change. That takes effort and perseverance. It requires taking risks, failing, and trying again.

I will help you understand the choices you make, and offer a different perspective. We’ll develop a plan to turn that understanding into useful action.

When you stop waiting for things to get better, and start making them better, you are capable of great things.

When I’m not helping my clients create better lives for themselves, I’m spending time with my two sons, my dogs Omar and Pearl, and a cantankerous kitten named Neptune.

I grew up in the woods of the Texas hill country, moved to Austin for college and never left (and probably never will). Before getting my masters, I spent a decade as a veterinary technician, and probably know more gross animal stories than any one person has a right to.
